Mental Health Unit

The Mental Health Unit was created by Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis in an effort to identify defendants suspected of having mental illness or intellectual disability and increase overall effectiveness in the Collin County MHMC Program.  The statutorily-dedicated scheme requires the MHMC Program to make a very early decision about the applicable MHMC criteria to an inmate and devise a suitable treatment plan.  The Mental Health Unit dedicates significant daily resources to collect information about the facts and circumstances of arrests/crimes, reviews the applicability of the criteria, and reviews the suitability of the treatment plan.  The information provided by the DA’s Mental Health Unit also assists magistrates with information to make reliable decisions.  These time-consuming efforts in a compressed time frame provide informed and educated decisions about continued incarceration of the inmate versus the potential risk to public safety.
