Our mission is to pursue justice and protect our community. In leading this mission, I’m fortunate to have some of the finest prosecutors, investigators, and legal secretaries in the State of Texas. People of high character, sincere devotion, and great skill. We believe there’s no greater stewardship than the lawful pursuit of justice. And we are honored to daily embrace this awesome responsibility on your behalf.
We fulfill our oath by looking to our prosecutorial compass – the law. It provides that the primary duty of all prosecuting attorneys is “not to convict, but to see that justice is done.” Yet justice itself is not a one-size-fits-all proposition.
Indeed, justice can mean life in prison without parole, or even the death penalty, for a capital murderer. It also requires us to protect the most vulnerable in our community, our children. So justice often means locking up a child predator for as long as the law allows.
But in other cases pursuing justice means a young, first-time, non-violent offender gets a chance to wipe his record clean by successfully completing a diversion program. Or the vigorous prosecution of drunk driving, to protect the liberties of the sober drivers and passengers on our roadways. Or the dismissal of charges against someone wrongfully accused. Or it can mean an effective prosecution of domestic violence by those well-versed in the complicated dynamics of family relationships. Though situations vary, pursuing justice and protecting our community is forever our mission.
